FAQs About Teeth Cleaning
Why Are Regular Dental Cleanings So Important?
Do your teeth ever feel fuzzy to the tongue? That’s called plaque! Plaque is the white, soft material that builds upon the surface of the tooth. It is an acidic substance and contains harmful bacteria that eats away at the outer surface of the tooth, called enamel, and can cause cavities. Plaque will develop into tartar if not removed and will lead to gingivitis and periodontal disease. The only way to detect tartar and to remove it is to see your dentist and hygienist regularly. Cavities, bad breath, and bleeding gums are only the beginning if plaque and tartar is left untreated.
Keep Your Whole Body Healthy
Studies have shown there is a link between oral health and overall health. The bacteria that grows in our mouth can travel throughout the body and is linked to many serious health conditions such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Your teeth and gums can also provide early warning signs for other health issues. Every time you come in for a cleaning, a comprehensive exam is done to check for any health problems.
Save MoneyKeeping up with dental cleanings helps to avoid more costly and extensive procedures. Prevention is key!
Whiten Your SmileCoffee, tea, wine, dark sodas, or tobacco can stain your teeth. A dental cleaning can remove stains leaving you with a brighter smile. Cornerstone Family Dentistry also offers other whitening options to give you a beautiful and bright smile.
What Can I Expect During a Cleaning at Cornerstone Family Dentistry?
Dental X-rays are an important part of a thorough dental examination and are completed once a year to detect cavities or other problems not able to be seen with the naked eye. Dental X-rays are both safe and effective. At Cornerstone, we use digital equipment which produces even less radiation exposure.
The dental hygienist uses an instrument called a scaler to remove plaque and tartar around the gum line and in between the teeth. The hygienist will then complete a soft tissue exam as well as check the health of your gums. This examination of your gums helps our team determine the cleaning that will be best suited for you.
Next, the hygienist will polish the teeth with gritty toothpaste. The purpose of this is to remove stains, remove small scratches on the tooth surface that plaque can adhere to, reduce corrosion of metallic restorations, and create a nice shine.
The next step is a professional flossing, which removes any leftover plaque and paste.
The next to last step is rinsing! Also, at this time a fluoride treatment may be applied. Fluoride helps prevent decay for several months, remineralizes the enamel, and can also help with sensitivity.
The hygienist will then go over any problem areas, educate you on ways to improve your hygiene at home and recommend any products that would benefit you. The dentist will be in last to do a thorough exam and determine if any dental work is needed.
