Improving Smile Esthetics in Children May Assist in Self-Confidence and Social Interactions

Apart from the many health benefits orthodontic treatment can have on children, including but not limited to less cavities and a corrected bite, there are many other benefits orthodontic treatment can have on children.  The main reason people get braces is to straighten out crooked teeth, so it goes without saying that one of the biggest benefits to your child getting braces is that he or she will have a new-and-improved smile.  But especially for children, having a beautiful smile can make a huge difference in self-esteem and confidence.

It is not hard to identify the kids who are insecure about their teeth.  Children with crooked teeth or bad bites tend to cover their mouths when they laugh, attempt to smile with their lips closed, and may even talk less with their peers.  According to Dr. D’Arcy Lyness on KidsHealth.org, “Kids who feel good about themselves have the confidence to try new things, are more likely to try their best, and feel proud of what they can do.”  As your child experiences the many challenges that come with growing up, giving him a smile that he is proud of could greatly increase his self-esteem and social interactions.

Isabelle, a freshman in high school, just got her braces off.  “Before I had braces I was too afraid to try out for the school play, even though I really wanted to.”  After her orthodontic treatment, Isabelle now has a beautiful smile and will play in the ensemble of James and the Giant Peach this spring.  She told us that the large gap in her front teeth made her incredibly self-conscious and prevented her from doing things like trying out for the school play.  Isabelle said, “Even though I was nervous to get braces at first, I’m really glad I did it and I’m doing things I used to be afraid to do!”

You may think that braces could also affect your child’s self-confidence and social interactions, but rest assured of several factors.  First, braces have come a long way since the days of huge metal brackets and headgear.  While traditional silver braces are still the most popular choice because they are effective and affordable, now your child can pick her favorite colors or the colors of his favorite sports team to go around the brackets.  The second important factor to consider is that nearly 75% of kids in America get braces at some point during their adolescence.  This means that while your child is wearing braces to improve his smile, his peers are too.

Our goal at Cornerstone Family Dentistry is to help children have confident smiles they are proud of.  The benefits of orthodontic treatment are endless!  We know how important it is for your child to have numerous positive social interactions and generate a healthy confidence.  We would love to help your child on this journey!
