What Is a Root Canal?

If you suffer from anxiety revolving around dental visits, you’re not alone. From the sound of dental equipment to terms like “tooth extraction”, visiting the dentist fills many Americans with an overwhelming sense of dread. More often than not, though, understanding everything there is to know about your dental procedure can alleviate much of the nervousness you might feel going into your appointment.

What Exactly Is a Root Canal?

As with most dental procedures, the technical terminology can sound a lot scarier than what will actually happen. Pain caused by a tooth’s nerve becoming infected or inflamed is the primary cause for a root canal. Root canals involve removing the infected or damaged part of the tooth, cleaning and disinfecting the area, then filling and sealing the tooth. Common causes for infection or inflammation include: deep tooth decay, trauma, defective crowns, or damage to the tooth.

What Happens During a Root Canal?

If your dentist suspects a root canal is necessary, he or she will first confirm using an x-ray. Once the affected area is located, your dentist will remove the infected or inflamed pulp from the inside if your tooth. After cleaning and disinfecting, the tooth is sealed to prevent any future infection. Finally, your dentist will apply a crown or filling for further protection. Local anesthesia is used throughout the entire procedure to ensure maximum comfort and a pain-free experience.

What Happens After a Root Canal?

As with most dental procedures, some extra care is required for a few days or weeks following your appointment. Some dentists recommend a follow-up appointment to ensure all signs of bacteria or inflammation are gone, and taking extra care of your teeth and gums is incredibly important. A good brushing and flossing routine can do wonders for getting rid of bacteria and preventing infection. Once the tooth is restored and healed, it will function just like any other.
