Dental Crowns
Sometimes a damaged tooth needs more than just a filling to protect and restore the tooth to health. For situations like this, Dr. Wilson might recommend a dental crown. A dental crown is a tooth-shaped covering that is placed over a tooth and is used to restore its shape, size, strength, and appearance. The Cornerstone Family Dentistry team is very experienced in providing dental crowns for patients and will make sure you’re comfortable before, during, and after the dental crown procedure.

There are many reasons why a dental crown may be recommended. A crown may be used to hold parts of a cracked tooth together or to protect a weak tooth from breaking. A weak tooth is the result of new decay forming on a tooth with an existing large filling or a tooth that needs a root canal. A dental crown can be used for cosmetic reasons as well; such as to cover misshaped or severely discolored tooth.
The process of receiving a dental crown usually requires two visits. During the first step, Dr. Wilson will use an anesthetic to numb the tooth and one of the Cornerstone Family Dentistry team members will take an impression of the tooth. This impression is used to make your temporary crown. Next, Dr. Wilson prepares the tooth for the crown and will take a second impression of the tooth. This second impression is sent to our very experienced lab to construct your new permanent crown. Before you leave, Dr. Wilson’s and her team will make a temporary crown to cover and protect the prepared tooth while the crown is being made. Once your permanent dental crown arrives from the lab, Dr. Wilson will remove the temporary crown and check the fit and color of the permanent crown. Then, she will secure the new crown with permanent cement.
