Post-Operative Care Instructions Extraction
Thank you for trusting us with your dental care. Your comfort and healing are our top priorities. Please follow these instructions carefully to ensure a smooth and comfortable recovery.
Rest and Activity
- Take it Easy:
Rest as much as possible for the first 24 hours. To help reduce swelling, keep your head elevated rather than lying flat. - Avoid Strenuous Activity:
Refrain from vigorous physical activity for the next 4 days to allow your body to heal.
Managing Bleeding
- Gauze Care:
We’ve placed gauze over the extraction site to control bleeding. When you get home, replace the gauze and apply firm pressure for one hour. Afterward, check the site directly (not just the gauze) to see if bleeding has stopped. If it continues, replace the gauze and apply pressure until it subsides. - Normal Oozing:
It’s normal to have some oozing for the first 24 hours. You may notice a bit of blood in your saliva over the next few days—this is expected.
Stitches
- If you have stitches, they will dissolve on their own within 5 to 7 days. There’s no need to worry about them.
Swelling Management
- Expect Some Swelling:
Swelling is likely to increase around days 2 and 3 but should gradually start improving after that. Use an ice pack on the outside of your face for the first 24 hours, alternating 30 minutes on and 15 minutes off. Avoid using ice while sleeping.
Pain Management
- Pain Timeline:
It’s common for discomfort to increase slightly over the first couple of days. You’ll likely feel the most discomfort on days 2 and 3. - Medication Routine:
Once the bleeding has stopped and you’ve eaten something soft, start taking the Ibuprofen/Acetaminophen combination as directed—every 6 hours for 3 to 4 days. This will help manage pain and swelling. - For Severe Pain:
If needed, you can take the prescribed narcotic pain medication between doses of Ibuprofen/Acetaminophen. Please alternate the narcotic and Ibuprofen/Acetaminophen every 3 hours to avoid feeling unwell. Always take medications withfood.
Diet
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of clear fluids and water.
- Soft Diet: Stick to soft foods like mashed potatoes, yogurt, and pudding for the next few days. Nutritional drinks like Boost or Ensure can help keep your energy up.
- Avoid Certain Foods: For the first 24 hours, avoid hot foods and drinks. Stay away from hard, crunchy foods like nuts and popcorn for at least a week.
- No Smoking or Alcohol: Please avoid smoking and drinking alcohol for 24 hours after surgery, especially while on pain medication.
Oral Hygiene
- Gentle Care: Don’t disturb the surgical area today. Starting tomorrow, rinse your mouth gently with warm salt water 3 to 4 times a day and carefully brush your teeth, avoiding the surgical site.
